I stumbled upon a nice radio forum about the World Cup due to start in 1-2 weeks time.
The focus was on group H, which consists of Spain, Chile, Honduras and Switzerland. As you can see, this group has a very Spanish flavour in it. While they all engaged in a bit of banter throughout the forum, overall the forum was very respectful, full of witty jokes and taught me a few Spanish phrases. One of the Spanish guys even performed "Libertadores" using an accoustic guitar. Awesome.
Thought I'd share a few interesting trivia, as the World Cup draws closer:
1) Honduras believes that this World Cup is a good omen, because the group name is "H". Superstition definitely alive and kicking.
2) Chile and Honduras are looking forward to their Spain match, given they used to be colonised by the latter many years ago.
3) Chile's manager is Argentinian. His tactical changes were initially being crucified by Chilean media for losing the first three matches (and helping the Argentinians), but it bore dividends when Chile qualified. They even beat Argentina away. Now they think Chile can win the World Cup.
4) The Swiss manager, Ottmar Hitzfeld is a German. In substance, he is Swiss. Was born 600m from the Swiss border, played a lot of football in Switzerland, and speaks the Swiss-German dialect fluently.
5) In Spain, bullfighting ranks 2nd only to football. A young kid wanting to learn bullfighting would sneak into the back tent and practice against a young bull. Dangerous, but cute.
6) All players in a Latin football team have a nickname. In fact, all Latin Americans do. Please confirm with your Latino / Latina friends.
7) The Swiss guy ended up winning the quiz. He superstitiously figures that now, his national team will follow suit!
World Cup 2010 is gonna be so awesome. Wahai budak QLD, MARI KITA MAIN BOLA!!!
